Frequently Asked Questions
  • Do You Have Any Breed Restrictions?
At Happy Hounds, we are completely committed to the safety, health and happiness of every kind of dog. We built our business on improving the lives of our furry friends. When considering policies for our daycare, we have to consider first and foremost the safety and health of our canine customers, second the wishes of our human clients, and third the welfare of our employees and brand as a whole.

We have a very stringent application and interview process for our canine clients - all dogs must pass this before entering our group play environments - and about 10% don't make it due to excessive possessiveness, territorial and fear aggression. So far we have an incredible safety record and we hold ourselves to the highest standards in caring for our furry family members.

Due to input from our clients, as well as other daycares from across the nation with various breeds, we made the decision that certain breeds are not appropriate candidates for our open play environment at Happy Hounds. These breeds include, but are not limited to the American Pit Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one or more of these breeds.

That being said, we are constantly reviewing the opinions of behavioral experts in this area to revisit our policies and still make every possible effort to review each dog on an individual basis, as we certainly don't want to unintentionally participate in breed discrimination. NOT all dogs of these breeds have issues in a group play environment, but it has became enough of an issue within the industry that we opted to go with our current policy until we could figure out another solution.

If there is a way we can integrate the breeds into our brand while protecting the interests I've mentioned above we are certainly open to it, but not without long thoughtful consideration, updated training for our staff and a comfort level among our clients, which is frankly the most important factor in our decision. We would rather work through the issues in a way that respects our clients wishes and respects our love and respect for all breeds - together.

Our hope is there is a middle ground we can come to that will allow us to maintain our industry's top tier standards without implying a prejudice at the expense of any animals, especially those that already face a tough battle due to public perception.

  • How is Happy Hounds Different From Traditional Boarding Facilities?
At Happy Hounds your dog will receive much more attention than at most traditional boarding facilities. Instead of spending days and nights confined to a cold, dark concrete run, guests at Happy Hounds get to spend their days romping and playing with other dogs in one of our supervised inside or outside play areas**. At night, your dog gets to sleep tight in one of our luxury suites, complete with comfortable bedding, a home-like interior, and even a TV, tuned to dog-friendly programming, of course!

We provide bedding, water and lots of love and attention. You only need to bring your dog's food, as well as any toys, treats or medicine they might require. We ask that you bring your pet's food because sudden changes in diet can easily upset a dog's stomach. For an additional fee we will provide food, but we highly recommend using your dog's own food.

**To be allowed in group play, all dogs must pass a temperament test. For dogs where group play is not an option, they will still get plenty of human attention and opportunity for play outside of their suite.
  • What do I Need Before I Bring My Dog?
If you are only coming for a dog wash, just check in at the front desk. No vaccination records or other information is required.

If you are interested in daycare and/ or boarding, we require that each dog be current on all vaccinations, including Rabies, Distemper, and Bordatella. We are aware that a Bordatella vaccination does not guarantee protection from the disease. But in an effort to make our facility as safe and healthy as possible for our guests, we do require all dogs be current on this. Please note that any vaccine takes days to weeks to stimulate the dog's protective immunity to the disease.  Vaccinating a dog the day it is exposed to disease may not be protective. If you plan to board your dog, or protect it from exposure during open play, remember to vaccinate a few weeks prior to potential exposure to allow full protective immunity to build up. There are both intra-nasal and injectable forms of the vaccine available. The intra-nasal vaccination may produce immunity slightly faster than the injectable vaccine. Please talk to your dog's Vet about which options are best for your pet.

If you would like a tour of our facility, we ask that you contact us to make an appointment. We are happy to oblige such requests, but we need to schedule them during times that we can assure our daily dog pack has proper supervision. If you are wondering why we don't allow strangers in the back play areas for long visits, it is not because we don't want prospective customers to see our facility. Dogs can be very funny about fences and other barriers. Some dogs, who otherwise are are playing happily can become very excited when a stranger approaches the fence, and that can lead to conflicts at the fence. We appreciate your understanding with this.

  • Why Do the Dogs Take a Break From 12pm - 2pm?
The dogs need breaks during the day just like any human does. If we did not make them take a break, many dogs would play until they are exhausted and that can lead to conflicts. During the break we serve lunch to the dogs who require it, allow them to digest their food, and/ or take a short nap before resuming play for the rest of the afternoon. If you drop your dog off at 11am, they will still take a break at 12pm, so please plan your drop offs and pick ups accordingly. We encourage our customers to bring their dogs for a full day with us to gain the most benefits from our services.
